When the box arrives, the first thing you notice is the weight—or lack thereof. At just 150 grams per sandal, these feel almost like foam slippers. The EVA material is smooth, matte, and slightly flexible, a stark contrast to the rigid cork footbeds of traditional Birkenstocks. The classic Birkenstock shape is unmistakable: the contoured footbed with deep heel cup, arch support, and toe grip ridges are all present, but rendered in a single piece of molded EVA. The thong strap is integrated, not glued, which bodes well for long-term durability.
The core difference is the material. Traditional Birkenstock sandals use a cork-latex blend that molds to your foot over time. The Cork Thong EVA uses ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), the same stuff used in Crocs and many athletic sandals. EVA is lightweight, waterproof, and requires no break-in period. The trade-off is longevity: EVA compresses more quickly and will not develop a personalized footbed like cork. However, for the price point (around $70), they are more affordable than standard Birkenstocks ($100+). The EVA version is also fully waterproof, making it ideal for poolside, beach, or rainy days.
Sizing runs true to Birkenstock's standard EU sizes (36-45). If you wear a Birkenstock Arizona in 38, order a 38 in the Cork Thong EVA. The fit is identical to the classic footbed shape, but the EVA material has less give than cork. For a snug fit, order your usual size. For a looser, more relaxed feel, consider sizing up one. The thong strap is fixed, so adjustability is limited. If you have high arches or wide feet, the standard width (medium) may feel tight; Birkenstock offers only one width in this model.
Out of the box, the EVA footbed is firm but not hard. The arch support is pronounced—some might even call it aggressive. The heel cup cradles your heel securely. The toe bar (that ridge under your toes) is noticeable but not uncomfortable. After a week, the EVA softens slightly but does not mold like cork. The material retains its shape, so the support stays consistent. For all-day wear, these are more comfortable than rubber flip-flops but less forgiving than broken-in cork Birkenstocks. The thong strap is smooth and does not chafe between toes, thanks to a soft rounded peg. No blisters here, even on the first day.
Walking in the Cork Thong EVA feels secure. The deep heel cup prevents the sandal from flopping, and the arch support stops your foot from pronating. On flat pavement, they are excellent. On uneven ground (gravel or grass), the thin EVA sole transmits more texture than a thick rubber sole. The outsole has a subtle tread pattern but lacks deep lugs; they are fine for dry surfaces but can be slippery on wet tile. Driving is acceptable—the sole is flexible enough to feel the pedals, but the thick footbed reduces tactile feedback. Not ideal for long drives.
EVA is inherently less durable than cork and rubber. After three months of daily wear, you may notice compression in the heel area (a shallow dent). The tread wears down faster than Birkenstock's EVA outsole on other models. The thong strap is molded into the footbed, so no stitching to fail. However, if the strap tears, the sandal is done—no repair possible. Expect 1-2 seasons of heavy use, or 3-4 seasons with occasional wear. For comparison, traditional Birkenstock cork sandals can last 5-10 years with resoling.
The design is minimalist: a single thong strap with the Birkenstock logo embossed on the footbed. Available in black, white, or muted earth tones (beige, taupe). They pair well with shorts, swimwear, sundresses, or athleisure. Not formal enough for office wear, but fine for brunch or errands. The EVA material has a slight sheen that can look plastic-y in bright light. The cork version (if you find the non-EVA model) has a more natural, matte finish. If you want a beach-to-bar sandal, these work, but the material might look too casual for dressed-up looks.
At $69.88, they are cheaper than traditional Birkenstocks but more expensive than generic foam sandals ($20-30). You pay for the footbed design and brand. If you already own cork Birkenstocks and want a waterproof alternative, these are a sensible addition. If you are new to Birkenstock, the Cork Thong EVA is a low-risk entry point—you get the orthotic support without the break-in commitment. However, if you plan to wear them daily and expect years of use, invest in the classic cork model. The EVA version is a niche purchase: great for specific use cases, not an all-rounder.
The classic Birkenstock Gizeh is the closest relative. The Gizeh has a cork footbed and a toe loop plus ankle strap. The Cork Thong EVA is simpler: just a thong strap. The Gizeh offers more adjustability (two straps) and better durability. The Mayari has a toe loop and wide strap. The Cork Thong EVA is the lightest and most affordable. For water activities, the EVA model wins because cork swells and deteriorates. For everyday wear, the Gizeh or Mayari are better investments. The EVA is also available in the Arizona slide style, but the thong version is more secure for active walking.
EVA is easy to clean: rinse with water and mild soap; air dry. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, which can cause fading and brittleness. Do not machine wash or use harsh chemicals. The footbed can develop odor over time; sprinkle baking soda and let sit overnight. The thong strap cannot be replaced, so handle the peg carefully when putting them on. Store in a cool, dry place—heat can warp the EVA.
EVA is a plastic (a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate). It is not biodegradable. Birkenstock states that this model is not recyclable through standard programs. The cork in traditional Birkenstocks is sustainably harvested and biodegradable, with a smaller carbon footprint. If eco-consciousness matters, the Cork Thong EVA is a compromise. However, the lightweight material reduces shipping fuel. Ultimately, the environmental cost is higher than cork but lower than many single-use plastics.
Buy these if: you need a waterproof, lightweight sandal for beach/pool; you want Birkenstock support but dislike the break-in; you are on a budget; you want a backup pair for travel. Skip these if: you want a sandal to last 5+ years; you prefer natural materials; you need arch support that customizes over time; you walk on slippery surfaces often. The Cork Thong EVA is a good product within its niche, but it is not a replacement for the classic Birkenstock experience. It is a practical, convenient, and comfortable option for specific scenarios.
