Walking

For thousands of years, we moved barefoot on uneven, yielding ground. Through forests, across sand, and over earth shaped by nature itself.

With 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles, and 114 ligaments, the human foot is a marvel of design. For millennia, its natural strength was shaped by the experience of walking barefoot upon the earth. Every step allowing the body to move freely and in balance.

From the touchdown of the heel, weight rolls along the outer edge of the foot before transferring to the ball of the foot. The movement ends with the lifting of the heel and a pushing off motion over the big toe.

Perfect weight distribution is achieved when walking on soft sand. The yielding ground underpins the anatomy of the foot as it moves.

But the modern world changed the ground beneath us.

Concrete. Asphalt. Hard surfaces that disconnect us from the way we were designed to move. The foot continues to carry us every day, but it has to work harder.

BIRKENSTOCK has been on a mission to rethink shoemaking, guided by the simple belief that all humans deserve to walk as nature intended.

Inspired by the foot’s imprint in sand, the BIRKENSTOCK footbed is designed to support a natural walking position.

Crafted from a unique blend of cork and latex, the iconic original footbed mimics the feeling of yielding ground. Balancing strength, flexibility, and support, it helps distribute weight evenly, stabilizes the foot, and encourages natural movement with every step.

One idea has guided everything we do: to help people walk as nature intended again.
